Meet Hector

In his 35 years of city residency, Hector has been actively engaged in his community. Many will remember him as the spokesperson for the Baltimore City Fire Department. His calming demeanor and professionalism instilled public confidence and reassurance, a quality that help the fire department communicate vital information to residents during incidents such as the Charles Tower high-rise fire and the CSX train derailment in 2001. His 29 years of service to the city included many significant accomplishments. Accolades include a nationally televised re-enactment of his dramatic helicopter rescue of three trapped workers in the Curtis Bay area.

Hector raised his children, Justin and Heather, in northeast Baltimore- both have entered public service careers in Baltimore.

Yet many may be less familiar with some of Hector’s further commitment to public service. As a board member of the United Way of Central Maryland, the Associated Catholic Charities of Maryland, and Centro de la Comunidad, Hector assisted these agencies in their efforts to help Baltimore’s most vulnerable residents. He also gained invaluable experience in the human services field in his position as Director of the Hispanic Apostolate and as the Executive Director of the Governor’s Commission on Hispanic Affairs. Hector currently serves an advisory board member to the University Of Maryland School Of Social Work and a board member of the Baltimore County Workforce Development Council where he continues to help shape positive development of Baltimore City’s human capital.

In the political arena, Hector has served in many capacities. He is currently a Commissioner with the Baltimore City Planning Commission. As a member of the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Task force on Property Taxes, Hector helped to provide solutions to the City’s disproportionately high tax rate. As a member of the Mayor’s transition team, Hector helped provided input to the priorities established by the Dixon administration. As the Chair of the President of the City Council’s Advisory Committee on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, Hector lead efforts to help Baltimore’s newest residents. He currently serves as a member of the External Advisory Board to the UMBC’s Public Policy Department. Hector is also a graduate of the Greater Baltimore Committee’s Leadership program (2001), and an alumnus of the Morgan State University- a premier institution in the heart of the 43rd.

Hector is also familiar with the difficulties and complexities of the American health care system, and the immediate impact of local hospitals on the lives of Baltimore residents.  He has served as a board member to the Baltimore Area Health Education Center and is currently serving as a board member to St. Agnes Hospital.

Hector  is President of Prosaber Consulting, specializing in emergency management and preparedness. His business acumen has been further refined with his service as a board member of 1st Mariner Bank.  Having developed a career in private business through his tenure serving the Baltimore City Fire Department, Hector understands the vital importance of small business and private enterprise to the economic development of Baltimore City.

Hector’s experience speaks for itself.  He has served in a multitude of capacities in a wide range of organizations, and is consistent in his resolve to serve his community.  Please help Hector take the next step, and deliver the active community representation the 43rd deserves.  Elect Hector Torres to Maryland Senate!
